Mechanism
Increase synaptic serotonin (and norepinephrine for SNRIs) by blocking reuptake transporters.
Environmental footprint
Alters gut motility (often causes GI symptoms). Sleep architecture changes. Initial worsening possible in some individuals.
What the evidence shows
Moderate effect size for depression and anxiety vs placebo in meta-analyses. Sexual dysfunction, GI changes, and withdrawal syndrome documented. Not addictive but discontinuation requires tapering.
